Get Ready to Move!
Follow these steps as you reach the end of your Home Selling Process to ensure an easy move.
All of the utility company phone numbers can be found in the local information section. Most companies are open after business hours for your convenience. Call the following that apply:
* Gas Company, for your final reading and to turn on the service to your new home
* Electric Company for your final reading & to turn on the service to your new home
* Phone Company with date to turn off your service and date to turn on the phone at the new home. You can have the phone on at both homes until you have completely moved out if you wish. Be sure to state if you need a separate line for your internet or home business. Select your long distance carrier, but check the rates you will be surprised at the difference.
* Cable Company to turn off service to your home and when to start the service at your new home. Be sure that you take your cable box with you. If you do not turn in the old box, they will charge you an enormous fee.
* News paper. Call your main news paper company, not your delivery person only, and ask for a confirmation number from the company.
* Call your internet provider.
* Get a change of address packet at your local post office or do it online at https://moversguide.usps.com
* Change your voter registration, car tags and registration under bmv.com, then select Ohio. Check the official City of Columbus site for more information.
* Call the water department to get a final reading and start the service at your new home.
* Call your bank and credit card companies. You may have to go into the bank to change your address.
* Refunds, Refunds!! Call your home owner insurance company the day after closing. Let them know you have closed on your home and give them the new address to forward any unused funds for the portion of the insurance policy you bought in advance. Also, check with your current mortgage company and give them your forwarding address about two weeks after closing. If you paid your taxes and insurance in with your payment, you should have a refund coming for the amount of money that is in your escrow account, if they did not credit your mortgage pay off at closing (most mortgage companies do not deduct it from your pay off balance).
* Write a form letter with an area to insert your account number, stating that you have moved. Send them to all your credit cards companies etc., giving them your new address and include your signature and new phone number. After you have moved, place all the envelopes that have been forwarded to your new address and send the companies your new address letter. There are so many companies to notify and it is very easy to forget some of them during this time. (Book subscriptions, catalogs, Dr. and Dentist, etc.)
